2/20/08 - WiFi Hot Spots
One thing I love about having a laptop is that I can bring it just about anywhere with a WiFi Hot Spot and connect to the internet. I've had a few people ask me recently what WiFi is, so I thought I would provide a brief explanation.
WiFi is short for Wireless Fidelity. It is a standard technology which allows anyone with a WiFi antenna in their computer to connect with a wireless internet access point. A wireless Internet Access Point can be provided anywhere a wireless router has been installed. This can include your home, your office, a local coffee shop, or any number of other places. Many access points are protected and you need a specific WEP code to gain access. (WEP stands for Wireless Equivalent Privacy and provides a high level of security to protect the internet at a specific location.)
A WiFi Hot Spot is a location where ANYONE with a WiFi enabled laptop can connect to the internet! There are no special codes required. However, it is sometimes hard to find these locations. My favorite website to locate Hot Spots in any area is: www.WiFiFreeSpot.com I'll be adding that link to our website in the next few days so it will always be available to you.
