1 April 2009 - The Conficker Virus:

News reports tell us that over the past few months millions of computers have been infected with the Conficker Virus.  This is the virus that is set to do lots of damage on April 1st.  In the last 24 hours, Geek For Hire, Inc. has received many calls about the Virus and I thought I’d pass along Chris’ advice:

“Although all infections should be taken seriously, I wouldn't lose sleep over this one more than any other.  If I prepped your machine and installed a new antivirus, it was done well.  There is no tool or set of tools that will provide 100% coverage of all things all the time.  But our process has a very good history of providing good protection.  We get very few calls from people saying they've become infected, and we deliberately cultivate an open line of communication with people to find out how well or poorly we're doing.”

Here is a complete description from the US Computer Emergency Readiness Team:  http://www.us-cert.gov/cas/techalerts/TA09-088A.html

and an article from PC Magazine:  http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2344198,00.asp

Remember, the best thing you can do to prevent an infection on your machine is:

  1. Have a good anti-virus installed

  2. Make sure that it is kept up-to-date

  3. Make sure that it is always turned on!  (Sometimes when you install a new program on your computer, it will ask you to turn off your anti-virus while the program is being downloaded and installed.  Remember to turn it back on when that process has completed.)

On a lighter note, and in keeping with the general prankster activities today, Google has introduced a new service called gDay where you can search tomorrow’s news today.  “The core technology that powers gDay is Machine Automated Temporal Extrapolation.”  Together you’d say it as “gDay MATE”.  Check it out here:  http://www.google.com.au/gday
