Cloud Computing

You've probably been hearing a lot about "Cloud Computing" lately and wondering what it is.  If you're using Gmail or Yahoo-Mail, you're already using the "cloud".

The "Cloud", or "Cloud Computing" refers to using computer resources outside of your own computer, whether it is a PC or a Mac.  There's a great picture from Wikipedia to show what it looks like and how you might use it.

The "cloud" has been used by major corporations for decades.  When employees put their data on the company's server so that the info can be used by other employees, they are using a highly secure "cloud".

Boulder's own National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) provides this definition:

Cloud computing is a model for enabling convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction.

Here are some examples of how you might be using the "cloud" right now without realizing it:

  • Storing your photos on FaceBook or Flicker

  • Using GoogleDocs to share a document with a co-worker

  • Using Gmail for your email service, rather than downloading each message to your computer.

  • If you have a website, you probably store it in the "cloud" rather than on your computer at home.

  • Using an on-line calendar to keep track of your business or family appointments

While the "Cloud" is very convenient to use, there are some inherent issues in using it.  Two of those issues you might experience are:

  • Privacy:  Since the data is stored offsite, your data is only as secure as the company it is store with.  Discontented employees, security breaches, etc. can all make your data more accessible to the public than you want it to be.

  • Data Access:  If your company has problems or their servers are down for any reason, you won't be able to access your files or data.
